What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling, also known as dry needle therapy, is an innovative technique for treating muscular pain and tension. It is based on medical research and has been practiced for over 50 years. In dry needling therapy, sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into so-called trigger points in the patient’s muscles to release local tension and thus relieve pain and, in the long term, prevent recurring tension.

Trigger points can be caused by chronic overuse, improper loading or insufficient movement.

Who is Dry Needling suitable for and who is it not for?

Dry Needling Physiotherapy is suitable for a wide range of patients, particularly those suffering from chronic muscular pain and tension. It can be used for back pain, tension headaches, pain in the Achilles tendon (achillodynia) or tennis elbow.

Although dry needling is safe for most people, there are certain circumstances in which it should be avoided. These include pregnancy, blood clotting disorders or skin diseases at the treatment sites.

How does Dry Needling work?

The therapy begins with our physiotherapists examining you closely and locating the affected trigger points (points of tension in a muscle). A sterile acupuncture needle is then inserted into the trigger point and moved to increase blood flow in the affected area and improve the oxygen supply to the point of tension. The needle movement also triggers a series of chemical reactions, which can lead to pain relief, relaxation and increased well-being during and after the application. Our experienced physiotherapists ensure that the needles are precisely placed to achieve the desired effect.

Advantages of Dry Needling Physiotherapy

Dry Needling Physiotherapy offers our patients a variety of advantages. In addition to the fact that we can design our therapy sessions individually according to your needs, you as a patient benefit above all from the following effects:

  • Effective pain relief: Your pain can be effectively reduced by the targeted stimulation of trigger points using fine needles.
  • Improved mobility: The therapy helps to reduce muscle tension and thus increase your flexibility.
  • Correcting muscular imbalances: Targeted stimulation helps to correct muscular imbalances and optimize your posture.
  • Accelerating the rehabilitation process: Dry Needling’s rapid effectiveness supports a speedy recovery, which is particularly important for sports injuries.
  • Promoting long-term muscular health: In addition to alleviating symptoms, Dry Needling contributes to long-term muscular health and the prevention of relapses.

Questions and answers

Do you have any questions? Here are some of the most common ones:

Dry needling can cause slight discomfort or local cramping, but is usually not perceived as painful. Many patients describe the feeling as a “pleasant pain”, comparable to a deep massage. The temporary discomfort occurs due to the targeted stimulation of trigger points and often signals the release of tension. Our experienced physiotherapists adjust the intensity individually to ensure an optimal balance between effectiveness and comfort. Despite the brief discomfort, many of our patients feel a noticeable relief and loosening of the treated muscles immediately after the session.

A typical dry needling session lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the number of trigger points to be treated. During this time, our physiotherapists will tailor the treatment precisely to your individual needs. Before each session begins, your therapist will conduct a thorough interview with you to gather relevant information and customize the myofascial therapy. Communication between you and our physiotherapists is essential to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments as needed.

The number of sessions needed varies from patient to patient. Many people experience significant improvement after a single session, while others need several sessions. It is best to talk to our physiotherapists about your needs so that we can determine the appropriate number of appointments for you.

Yes, in many cases dry needling is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It can be combined well with physiotherapy exercises, manual therapies and other treatment approaches.

Most of our patients in Zurich tolerate the treatment very well. In some cases, however, there may be slight bruising or muscle soreness in the area of application. However, these side effects are usually mild and subside quickly.

The cost of a dry needling treatment depends on your individual needs and the associated design of the therapy session. In principle, you can expect to pay around 55-90 CHF for a 25-minute session. Depending on the case, if the therapy has been prescribed by a doctor, your health insurance will cover some or even all of the costs for you.
