Kinesiology tape, also known as physio tape or muscle tape, is an elastic band made of cotton that has an acrylic adhesive layer. It has the same elasticity and thickness as human skin, which means it adapts perfectly to every natural movement of the body. The elastic tape remains stuck to the skin for four to seven days after application and is waterproof
Our physiotherapists carefully apply the elastic tapes to your skin using kinesio taping to support the function of certain muscle groups and to relax or stabilise your joints where necessary. This technique was developed in the 1970s by the Japanese chiropractor Dr Kenzo Kase. Kinesio tape has since proven its worth in physiotherapy and sports medicine, relieving pain and supporting the body’s natural healing process.
Kinesiology tape is suitable for a range of complaints and injuries. It stimulates the body’s own healing process by providing muscular support and stability without impairing mobility. Therefore, medical taping is often used as a complementary treatment method in (sports) physiotherapy.
However, there are patients for whom kinesio tape should not be used. These include patients with skin conditions, open wounds or allergies to the adhesive in the acrylic layer. Kinesio tape is also of no use to patients with serious injuries requiring emergency medical treatment.
Treatment with physio tape involves applying the elastic tapes to your skin. Our physiotherapists use special techniques that help to stabilise your joints and support your muscles. The light pressure and stretching of the kinesio tape on your skin during movement promotes microcirculation, i.e. blood flow in the corresponding area. The stretchability of the tape makes the effectiveness of the tape possible without causing movement restrictions
Professional treatment with kinesio tape by our physiotherapists offers numerous advantages. Some of them are:
Do you have any questions? Here are some of the most common ones:
Yes, Kinesio tape can also be used preventively to prevent injuries, support the muscles and thus optimise athletic performance.
Yes, with a little practice and instruction from our physiotherapists, you can learn to apply the tape yourself on a regular basis. However, there are certain areas of application that require techniques that should only be performed by a trained therapist. We will be happy to discuss with you which method is the right one for your individual case during a visit to one of our Physio Station practices.
Yes, a slight reddening of the skin after removing the tape is normal and should disappear within a day. However, if the redness is severe or does not go away, you should seek medical attention.
Kinesiology tape is generally skin-friendly and does not cause allergic reactions. However, people with particularly sensitive skin or known adhesive allergies may experience undesirable allergic reactions. In such cases, you should remove the tape immediately and consult a doctor.
To meet your individual needs, we offer flexible appointment options that allow you to find a treatment time that fits your schedule.
