Self-directed training in case of sarcopenia

in case of sarcopenia

Train independently

Prevent chronic complaints with regular exercise.

Sarcopenia refers to the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength and function, which can lead to impaired mobility, an increased risk of falls, increased susceptibility to disease and a reduced quality of life.

What does independent training mean in the case of sarcopenia?

Sarcopenia is not only a result of aging: muscle biopsies have shown that muscle tissue itself does not suffer from the aging process. The loss of muscle mass and strength is more likely due to an inactive lifestyle, which often arises from professional and family priorities.

Most people reach their optimal muscle condition in their early twenties, after which muscle mass decreases by 0.5 to 1.5 percent annually. After 10 to 15 years, 10 to 15 percent of muscle mass has already been lost, often accompanied by an increase in fat mass. A sedentary lifestyle can also cause muscles to shorten, leading to restricted mobility and complaints that often require physiotherapy.

Training on one’s own initiative helps to counteract muscle loss, maintain muscle strength and even improve it. We recommend strength training that aims to build and maintain muscle mass. This can be achieved by exercises with your own body weight, resistance bands or light weights.

Specific strength training is particularly effective. Here, strength training on machines is particularly suitable for providing an effective training stimulus for strength building. This is difficult to achieve with your own body weight.
